Hello families of room 14.
Thanks to all of you for a terrific first week in Grade 5/6. We appreciated your patience this week as we are establishing our routines, and getting to know each other. We've had a great number of envelopes returned already containing all of that important information that was sent out from the office this week. If you have not yet had a chance to update the demographic forms or fill out rest of the paperwork, please do so and send it in on Monday. Please note for Grade 6's some vaccination forms are coming home today that will also need to be returned on Monday. A reminder that we can be most easily reached during the day by email and we look forward to connecting with you all at our curriculum night on Sept. 12 from 4pm-7pm. Here is a summary of what we did this week: Math: We started problem solving with a 4 4's problem. Ask your child to show you a few of their solutions. We also revisited multiplications facts - this is a great activity to work on at home if you are interested in enrichment activities, or if you notice that your child would benefit from extra practice in this area. Science: Grade 5's started their unit on Weather. Grades 6's began work on the Sky Science unit. Next week we will be getting to work on some bigger projects that you can look out for early in the week. Humanities: Grade 5's are getting ready to start studying the regions of Canada by beginning to review our provinces and capital cities. Next week we will be starting our research on the regions of Canada. Grade 6's began their study of democracy in looking at our individual rights and freedoms as Canadians. Health: We have started exploring the concept of living our best life. We have identified the power of positive thinking and risk taking, and are identifying what qualities we have or are striving towards in order to lead positive lives. We are designing covers for our Best Life Journals. Please keep checking the blog, as we will be adding useful links and information next week, and continuing throughout the year. Reminders at a glance:

Thank you to the parents who reported the exciting stories students told at home. Continuing North Haven students and new students are connecting and enjoying a longer recess this year. In classes there are already many rigorous learning opportunities under way. As we look forward to our second week of school we wanted to take the opportunity to remind you of a few things. Attendance When your student will be absent or late, our attendance line is option 1 at 403-777-6220. Reminder: Alternate Dismissal Alternate dismissal on Fridays is at 12:05 PM. Note: This is a late dismissal for our kindergarten students. Buses will depart the school when all students are safely loaded. This routine is established during the first week of school. After School Plans Please ensure that you are advising teachers and the office when there is a change to after school plans, prior to the end of the school day. Transportation Update Southland Transportation continues to work to recover from the vandalism of dozens of buses. They are working to order parts and repair the dozens of buses that were damaged the night before the start of school. Understandably, they do not have enough of buses to replace those damaged so they have been managing routes with fewer buses and that has caused major delays. We have been advised each day that we will not see major delays the follow day, however, things changed as the drivers conducted their routes. We appreciate the flexibility and patience of all families who use the buses, as Southland Transportation resolves the issues.
