If you have not yet managed to connect with your child's teacher at this point, please send an email detailing some after school times that you are free to meet. Tomorrow's schedule will be altered to accommodate an in-school program called "Let's Talk Science". Grade 5's and 6's will participate in a 1 hour program called "Entrepreneurial Science" in the morning with their homeroom classes. Program Description: Students form a company and invent and evaluate a self-propelled object. Students use problem solving, planning, designing, testing and budgeting. Reminder that report cards will go home with your child at the end of the day tomorrow. This week: Phys Ed - Snowshoeing started today. Please continue to dress for the weather and be ready and wearing your outdoor clothes before PE each morning. Science: Grade 6's are continuing to work on evidence and investigation. Today we went outside to try to find tracks to practice our animal tracking skills. Quiz on this unit TBA, but coming soon. Grade 5 is working on classroom chemistry. Today we explored mystery mixtures, and we will be moving on to acids and bases. Social Studies: Grade 5's are looking at Indigenous nations across the regions of Canada and researching how they made their living using the resources the region provided. Grade 6's are continuing the study of Ancient Athens by looking at key locations that were the birthplace of democracy. Please remember that Social Studies textbooks for both grades are available on Google drive for study at home at anytime. Math: We started division today with all students. We reviewed the Big 7 strategy for division for students that studied it last year. Students discussed the meaning of and relationships between 'values' and 'relationships' . This unit will continue for the next two weeks. It's a great week to discuss your own family values as a family. Good afternoon, Gym: This week we have been playing doubles kings court in badminton! Students need to use their badminton skills to stay on the kings side of the court of as long as possible! Next week in gym we will be snowshoeing (weather dependent). Students need to be wearing appropriate footwear such as, waterproof hiking boots, rain boots or winter boots. Shoes the students wore for camp would be perfect for this activity! Please have your students dress for the weather with snow pants, jackets, hats and mitts! Math: Grade 5 students have been continuing to practice their multiplication skills using the three strategies, lattice, window and traditional. Students are practicing with all three strategies to determine which strategy they feel most comfortable using. Ask your child to show you which strategy is their favorite! Grade 6 students are learning how to multiply with decimals. They are using the same three strategies, lattice, window and traditional, to multiply with decimals! See anchor charts below. Ask your child to show you which strategy is their favorite! Science: Grade 6 students have wrapped up all their YouthLink post-activities focusing on gangs, drugs and cyber safety. Our next steps are to be looking at tracking through footprints, tire and animal tracks. Grade 5 students started exploring 8 different mixtures! They needed to determine if the mixture was a solution, alloy, colloid or suspension and create a hypothesis on what ingredients are in each mixture! Earlier this week students got their Weather Watch tests back, if they have not been returned signed please do so by Friday. Humanities: Literacy: Students have been focusing on story writing with the use a of Haunted House picture prompt. We have focused on entertaining beginnings, elaborative details and suspense. This everyone worked on putting these elements together to start their story. We have started exploring main event and endings! Students will then be working to revise and edit their work! Social: Grade 5's have started their Histories and Stories of Canada unit by looking at different Indigenous Peoples of Canada and how their stories tell us about their beliefs regarding the relationship between people and the land. Grade 6's have started looking at Ancient Athens determining why the following sites were important to ancient Athenian democracy: Pnyx Hill, the Agora and the Bouleuterion. Good afternoon, Gym: Students continued badminton this week, today we focused on serving and target practice. Math: This week we reviewed window and lattice multiplication strategies and started learning Traditional Algorithm. This week we are starting right back in to curriculum preparing for our upcoming field study next week. Math: We have been reviewing measurement activities from before the holidays and will be wrapping up this portion of our measurement unit. Over the course of next week we will be moving into different multiplication strategies. Science: Evidence and Investigation: Students have been working on preparing themselves for our upcoming field study to the Police Interpretive Centre next week, We have been learning about the characteristics needed to be a strong detective or police officer, steps to solve a crime and fingerprinting. Later this week we will be looking at footprints, tracking, hairs, DNA and handwriting. Today we hosted staff from Nose Creek school who will be met with students currently attending North Haven School from Harvest Hills Community. They will be discussed the important transition resulting from the change in designation for all Harvest Hills students from North Haven to Nose Creek School for the 2020-2021 school year. This week we are looking forward to some holiday caroling but also continuing to cover curriculum until into final days of 2019! Gym: Students played bench ball and reverse bench ball! We are looking forward to starting snowshoeing in the new year! Literacy: Students are working on creating dialogue for comics and doing some reading comprehension focusing on inferring meaning from hints in the text, and by synthesizing information with what they already know. Mrs. Robb has strongly encouraged all students to access Raz kids over the holidays as often as possible to help refine reading comprehension skills. This is a great resource for home reading for all ages and skill levels. Students should additionally be reading chapter books for a minimum of 20 mins a day to build spelling, vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as meeting our collective goal of reducing excessive screen time. Math: Students continuing working through their measurement unit focusing the metric system, area, perimeter and volume! Humanities: Grade 5: Students have wrapped up their Regions of Canada unit and are preparing for a unit test this week. Students are completing a study guide to help them prepare for their unit test Wednesday Dec. 18th. Grade 6: Students have wrapped up their Iroquois Confederacy unit and we preparing for a unit test this week. North Haven Update: North Haven’s Parent Council is doing a cheque writing campaign! Last year’s campaign funded new MacBook Airs to support technology in the classroom. The goal this year is to reach $5000. Currently, parent council has raised $1800 of donations! Please help support the cause! This could potentially fund new robotics, a soccer residency, and karate. Cheques can be made out to the Calgary Board of Education. Donations over $25.00 with the student’s name in the memo will be given a tax receipt. Thank you for supporting new learning opportunities at North Haven. MyCBE / PowerSchool will be unavailable from Dec. 20, 2019, at 5 p.m., to Dec. 27, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., for an important upgrade. This includes student fees and service registrations (i.e., transportation and noon supervision) In the spirit of giving, the staff, students, families, and community members of North Haven came together on Dec. 13th for our annual Community Family Outreach. The turnout and support for this special night was truly remarkable. It was a heartwarming evening. Thank you to everyone!
