Hello North Haven Student and Parents,
On Thursday September 20th, we will be participating in the Terry Fox School Run. We will be collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. We are encouraging a ‘Toonie for Terry’ as a school wide target. Please bring in your toonies to help a great cause! A short assembly will be held at 1:15 and our school wide run will start at 1:30 and finish at 2:00. Thank you for all your support we are looking forward to another great Terry Fox Run! Our first fun lunch of the year is fast approaching. Our October 11th Fun Lunch is with Subway!
Please place your order before Friday, October 5th. If you wish to register for this or any of the other upcoming Fun Lunches, head to www.healthyhunger.ca. Any child who is at the school over the lunch hour is able to participate. EDC and bussed kindergarten students are not included due to bus schedules. However, please watch the blog for Friday snacks which are available to EDC and Kindergarten students as well. For help registering or ordering lunches, please head to the FAQ page on the Healthy Hunger Site or contact Healthy Hunger at 1-800-818-6260. Part of the work we've been doing in Room 7 is learning about Fixed Mindset vs Growth Mindset. A fixed mindset assumes that intelligence and other qualities, abilities and talents are fixed traits that cannot be significantly developed. A growth mindset assumes that intelligence and other qualities, abilities and talents can be developed with effort, learning and perseverance. Everyone is born to learn and we're all at a different place in our learning. It's not a matter of "I can't" but a matter of "I can't yet".
As we move through the year, we will be challenging our students to shift from that fixed mindset to one of growth, hopefully increasing confidence in our learners. As confidence increases so does the academic risk-taking and challenges that students are willing to take on to grow as learners and young people. A quick reminder that the Curriculum Evening is happening this Thursday, September 13th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Our North Haven Parent Association will also be hosting a "Welcome Back" pizza event from 4:30 - 5:30 pm out on the compound behind our school. Classroom meetings will follow at 5:30 pm; we will be meeting in our classroom (Room 7). I'm looking forward to connecting with parents and being able to discuss, as well as answer questions, around what this year will look like with regards to our classroom, curriculum, integrations and so forth. Mrs. Maheu Can you believe that we are back in school already? I hope you've had a lovely, restful summer and are excited for a fun and challenging year ahead.
Ms. Murphy and I are looking forward to getting to know all of our new and returning students. Please note that blue daybooks will be coming home daily as a means for us to communicate about your child's day, goals we are working on and tools that have helped. It is also a chance for your child to reflect on their own learning and self-regulation. Ms. Murphy and I appreciate any communication from home that may help us support our students and their success throughout the day. Welcome back! Let's have a safe and positive first week in Room 7.
