Today we started with our calendar and the days of the week, then the next chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students are really enjoying the Reading Power visualizations that they are doing, as they draw characters from the story based on the descriptions. It also links well with our thinking about adjectives. Next the class had independent reading time on Raz Kids, which they alternated with guided reading with an adult.
After recess, the students had drumming in music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math. Today we focused on spatial reasoning, and the students had to manipulated shapes in their heads to predict what they would look like from different angles. It was tricky thinking but everyone tried really hard! After lunch, we had badminton in the gym. We also did the 'Fill your Bucket' activity by writing compliments to each other, then we played 'What's in the Box?' to practice asking and answering questions. It was a busy but fun afternoon. **Reminders - Please sign and return IPP signature pages and report card envelopes - See the previous post for information about the next Fun Lunch order - No school tomorrow - Next week will be cold, students must have gloves and hats for outside recess Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson

Dear North Haven Families,
We would like to invite you, on behalf of North Haven Parent Association to order Healthy Hunger for this month. The final day to order is Friday and the lunch will be next Thursday, February 7th. While you are on the site you may also order Jugo Juice for snack day. It will be given out on the morning of the 13th to allow our Kindergarten students to participate. In addition to lunch and snacks, you can also purchase tickets to our school dance on February 28th or donate for new computers. We appreciate your support and participation in all the ways each of you have joined our learning community. Sincerely, North Haven School We started our day with the calendar, days of the week and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students are able to recall a lot of detail from previous days, which is great to see. Next, we did spelling and literacy in our groups. The students are still working on their Willy Wonka candy invention advertising posters using adjectives.
Then, we did an in class speech and language activity where the students were given words, and they had to work together to decide what the two categories could be. It was a great problem solving activity, which required the students to visualize and use their prior knowledge to group the words. After recess, we had science and set up our weather station outside to make and record our first observations. We will make observations 3 more times. Next, we browsed in the book fair and each person made a wish list to bring home. Money for books can be brought in tomorrow. After lunch, we practiced badminton in gym. Then, we played math games in groups, and had math with Mr. Hassett. In math we continued to work on numbers and using number lines to add and show our thinking. **Reminders: - Parent/teacher conferences are tonight and tomorrow night, sign up for a slot online - Book fair money can be brought in tomorrow - No school Friday - Please sign and return IPPs to school Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we continued to practice the days of the week and organizing the calendar. Next, we read a bit more of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and then we did some Reading Power. In Reading Power, we are continuing to work on visualizing, so the students heard a description of Violet Beauregard from the story, and they had to imagine what she looks like and draw a picture. Then, the students had independent reading time on Raz Kids, and guided reading time with an adult to work on decoding and comprehension.
After recess, the students had music with Mrs. Hartley, where they started drumming. Next, we had math to continue using number lines to count, add, and check our mental math. After lunch, the class had gym where they practiced their badminton skills. Then we had some time to work on the Amazing Race Canada social studies project. It is a long assignment, but there is a lot of great work happening. Next, the students frosted and tasted their rainbow cupcakes from yesterday. They were a hit! Everyone enjoyed tasting them, and they looked really awesome! Finally, we ended the day with a speech and language group game in the classroom. The students had to throw a ball to each other in a circle and say words that belong to a given category. We are going to work on expanding the vocabulary so that we don't get any repeated words. **Reminders: - Report cards/IPPs went home today, please sign and return the IPP signature sheet and envelope - Parent/teacher conferences are tomorrow and Thursday evening, sign up for a conference online - No school Friday - Book fair browsing is tomorrow, purchasing is Thursday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson We started our day with the days of the week and the calendar, followed by the next chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students are getting better at hearing the adjectives and the rhyming words from the story.
The students then had some time to work on spelling, then literacy. Usually on a Monday the students write about what they did on the weekend, but today they had the option to be creative. They had the choice to write about what actually happened, or be creative and make up a story about something that they would have liked to do. Some students came up with some great adjectives to add details to their writing. After recess, we had math and continued to add and sequence numbers on number lines. The students are all getting much more confident using the number lines to help them answer questions and check their work. Next, we had technology where the students had to log in, sign out and return their laptops independently, and they also played Red Block Rescue. This is a spatial reasoning and problem solving game that they are all very engaged in, which we have played several times in math. After lunch, we had badminton in our freshly painted gym. We finished the day by making 'Willy Wonka's Rainbow Cupcakes' to practice mixing and being safe around the oven. The students will be icing and tasting their cupcakes tomorrow. **Reminders: - Report Cards/IPPs go home tomorrow - Parent/Teacher conferences are Wednesday/Thursday evening, sign up for a time online - Book Fair browsing is Wednesday, purchasing is Thursday - No school Friday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the calendar and days of the week, then we read the next installment of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - the students are really enjoying the story and the funny things that happen to the characters.
Using a rhyming song from the book, we worked as a group to identify the rhyming words. At first it was tricky, but it became easier as the students started to get more familiar with what rhyming means. Next, we continued to work on their Willy Wonka candy invention advertising posters. There are some great adjectives being used, and some really creative ideas! After recess, the students had integrated Inquiry Time, focusing on either art, STEM or environmental. It is great to see the students mixing with their peers and enjoying some inquiry-based learning. At the end of the day, we had a movement break and then played a math spatial reasoning game as a group on the whiteboard. **Reminders - Sign up online for parent/teacher conferences - Conferences are Jan. 30-31 - Report cards/IPPS go home on Jan. 29 - Book fair browsing is on Jan. 30, purchasing is on Jan. 31 - Grade 4 families: if you have not received your Pillar survey, please let us know Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson We started our day with the days of the week, and the next part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We then did some Reading Power and practiced visualizing. The students listened to a description of an Oompa Loompa and drew it as they imagined it. Next, the students had guided reading and Raz Kids for some independent reading time.
After recess, the class had music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math. The students are continuing to practice adding with a number line and thinking about the sequence of numbers. The students had lunch and recess, then they had their last Passion for Glass session, where they learned about how glass is blown to make bottles and vases. Next, they had speech and language where they practiced asking and answering questions by playing 'What's in the Box?' - there were some great questions asked, and it was a good opportunity to practice taking turns and communicating with each other. **Reminders: - Sign up for parent/teacher conferences online - Parent/teacher conferences are after school on January 30/31 - Book Fair browsing is January 30 - Book Fair purchasing is January 31 - Report cards/IPPS go out January 29 Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson We started the day with the calendar and days of the week, and then we read the next chapter of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. From there, we worked on the advertising posters for the Willy Wonka style inventions that they have thought up. We are using adjectives to describe the products and try to make other people interested in them. Next, we did a speech and language activity to practice using categories to think about words. The students were given two categories and worked in groups to think of words to put into each category.
After a snowy recess, we had science and the students worked in a group to build a weather station instrument. Our class weather station is now complete! Next, the class finished a piece of weather art that they have been working on, showing a storm using crayon, paint and colored paper. They look great! The school had an indoor lunch recess, then we had group games. The students chose between cup stacking, colouring, a problem solving game on the board or Connect 4. It was a great opportunity to practice social communication and turn taking with our friends from Bridges! Last, we had a movement break and then math to continue practicing adding numbers using a number line. **Reminders - Sign up for parent/teacher conferences online - Parent/teacher conferences are January 30-31 - Report cards/IPPS go out on January 29 - Crazy Hat/Hair Day is tomorrow We started our morning with the calendar, days of the week, and sequencing dates. Then, we read the next part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - it is starting to get very exciting! We used the description of Willy Wonka in our Reading Power activity on visualizing. The students were given a body outline, and they had to use the description to colour the picture as they imagined it.
Next, the students had time on Raz Kids for independent reading, and they each had guided reading with an adult to work on sight words, decoding and comprehension skills. After recess, the class had music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math. Today in math we worked on spatial reasoning, and had to guess then find out how many footsteps away things were. The students started to make more accurate guesses after some testing. Since the gym is being painted this week, we had a Lego building challenge with our friends from Bridges instead of gym. The students worked in groups to create letters, and they were all very successful! There was some fantastic teamwork going on during this activity, which is always great to see. Next, we wrote some new 'Proud Clouds' for the students to reflect on things that make them feel proud. Finally, we had the school speech language therapist in to help us do role playing to practice some social communication skills. Today we focused on compromising with friends when they want to do different activities. The class had a lot of fun acting out these negotiations, and it gave them the chance to use a lot of social language. **Reminders - Sign up for parent/teacher conferences on the portal starting tomorrow at 4:00 - Parent/teacher conferences are January 30-31 - Report cards/IPPs go home January 29 - Crazy Hat/Hair Day is Thursday - Book Fair browsing is January 30, Book Fair purchasing is January 31 Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Our class started the day with the calendar, sequencing the days of the week and sequencing the numbers of the date. Next, we read a bit more of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students have been making predictions about what sort of things will be inside the factory, and what the workers will look like. This allows them to use their imaginations, as well as make connections with the movie if they have seen it already.
The class worked on literacy, and wrote about what they did at the weekend. The students are continuing to focus on adjectives, and some are also focusing on using appropriate spacing and punctuation. Finally, the class did a group speech and language activity, where the continued to think about categories. The students were given two categories and had to think of words that would go into each one. At first it was tricky, but everyone got better at it by the end. After recess, we had math where the students practiced numbers and adding with number lines. Everyone is starting to become more confident to use number lines to add or check their mental math. Next, the class had technology. We did a Kahoot! quiz about sequencing numbers, and the focus of the lesson was to use technology appropriately and respectfully, including taking the iPads out of the cart and returning them in the correct place. We will keep working on this. The gym is being painted this week so we could not have our usual gym time, but we had a cup stacking competition instead, which was really fun! Then, we had cooking. The students made 'Charlie's Minty Chocolates' to practice mixing and using the microwave. They looked and smelled delicious! **Reminders - Crazy Hat/Hair Day is Thursday - Sign up for parent/teacher conferences starts on Wednesday at 4:00 on the portal - Report cards/IPPs go home on Jan. 29 - Parent/teacher conferences are Jan. 30-31 Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson |
