We started our day with our usual days of the week, months of the year and the calendar, and then we read the next chapter of The Water Horse. It is great to see the students retaining information from previous days and making predictions about a completely unfamiliar story. Next, the class had guided reading time with an adult, as well as independent reading time on Raz Kids.
After recess there was music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math. In math we are continuing to work on our foundational math skills through practicing counting and skip counting. After lunch the class had gym, and then they had their book exchange time in the library. We spent the rest of the afternoon working on social communication through decorating new buckets (the old ones were full!) and doing the 'Fill your Bucket' activity by having each person write a compliment to a classmate. **Reminders - No school tomorrow - Next week is spring break, the first day back is April 1 Have a safe and happy spring break! Today we started with the calendar, days of the week, months of the year and the next chapter of The Water Horse. The students are really improving in their ability to recall key events and information from the previous days. Then, we had literacy and worked on finding information from newspaper articles and beginning to write their own articles. Next, we had our last speech and language activity focusing on categories. The students had to run from one space in the room to another to group words into given categories, and they have become much more confident with this over the last several weeks.
After recess we had math and continued to work on counting and skip counting by different intervals. We then had art and used paint and hands/fingers to try and replicate animal tracks, which linked to the science lesson we had this afternoon. After lunch we had gymnastics with the equipment in the gym, and then we had science. In science the students had to make observations and inferences to look at animal tracks and research with a partner to identify them. There was a lot of great teamwork and observations that happened in this lesson! **Reminders: - Decade Day is tomorrow - Please return all library books - No school Friday - Spring break is next week, first day back is April 1 Have a nice weekend, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the days of the week and months of the year, and filling out our calendar. The students then had time for independent reading and comprehension on Raz Kids, as well as guided reading with an adult. After recess the students had music, and then they had math. Today we focused again on counting in 1s, as well as skip counting. Some of the students also added up the number of markers we have collected for recycling. So far we have 433 to send in to Crayola! After lunch the students had gym outside in the sunshine, and then we had social studies. The students are continuing to make good progress on their Amazing Race Canada projects, which involves colouring and labelling maps, finding keywords and researching information. **Reminders: - We are collecting Change for Change tomorrow for World Water Day - Decade Day is Thursday - No school Friday - Coats are still needed for recess, especially in the morning Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson On Thursday, March 21st we will be having Decade Day! Please choose a decade such as the 1800s, 50s, 80s, 90s, etc. and dress like you would during that time!
Thanks everyone! Today we started with our usual days of the week, months of the year and filling out the calendar. Then, we read the next part of The Water Horse and talked about what happened in the story last week. We then did literacy and focused on writing about what everyone did over the weekend. Today the students wrote about their weekend in a newspaper format, with a headline, byline, and answering the 5Ws. We ended our literacy lesson with a speech and language activity around categories. We are wrapping up our practice with categories, and will be moving on to other speech and language topics after the break.
After recess the students had math, and everyone practiced counting. Some of the students are counting in 1s, while others are working on skip counting to help them with their multiplication and addition. Next, we had technology and everyone practiced typing. Some of the class worked on typing with speed, while others focused on finding the right letter and using the space bar. After lunch we had gymnastics in the gym, and the class had the opportunity to try different balances and types of movement using the gymnastics equipment. Then, we had cooking. In cooking we made Scottish Cranachan, which involved using the stove top, a mixer and crushing berries. The students worked in groups to practice the skill that is most appropriate for them. It looked delicious! **Reminders: - Tomorrow is World Water Day, and we are collecting change tomorrow and Wednesday to help those in need of clean water. The students who contribute money will get their name on a water droplet to be displayed in the school - No school Friday - Spring break is next week - All overdue library books need to be returned - Thursday is Decade Day Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started the day with finishing our 'What's in the Box?' game that we ended with yesterday - they used some extra clues to help guess the right answer!
Then, we did the calendar, days of the week and months of the year and read the next part of The Water Horse. We then had a brief literacy lesson, before going to the Gr. 1/2 Celebration of Learning assembly. It was fantastic to see the work that the other students have been working on. After snack we had the integrated inquiry hour where the students worked on either an art or STEM project. It's a great opportunity for our class to work with their peers and get to know some other students within the school. We ended the day with our Crayola Colourcycle project. Some students went around to the other classes to collect dried out markers, and then we worked as a class to sort and count them. We will be using this information to work on some graphing, and to prepare for sending the markers off to be recycled. **Reminders: - Please return all overdue library books - Change for Change water fundraiser is March 19-20 and the students are invited to bring in change and get their name on a water droplet for a school display - Decade Day, where students can dress in clothing from any decade is March 21 - No school March 22 - An email has been sent out with information regarding upcoming changes with our before and after school care provider Have a nice weekend, Ms. Anderson Today has been a really fun day!
First thing in the morning we had our time with Mobile Escape. In groups, we did a submarine escape room, an Egyptian escape room, code cracking, and a puzzle to turn off a time machine. The students worked so well together, and used their problem solving skills to help them find clues and solve puzzles. It was a really fun way to work on new skills and experience different types of problems. After recess the students had music, then we did guided reading and Raz kids. The students worked on reading and comprehension during both of these activities. After lunch the class had gymnastics in the gym, and then we had our library time. Today we learned how to use Kid Power, so that the students can be more independent and sign their own books in and out. Then we had our book exchange. We will also be collecting Change for Change (on March 19 and 20) and giving it to a Calgary based, non-profit organization known as CAWST (the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology). Our goal is to make waves and raise $600 in order to help CAWST provide the knowledge and skills for people around the world to have proper sanitation and access to clean water. Please help us help others! Thank you! Mrs. Patterson, Ms. Petrie and the students in the Water Club. Today we started with the usual calendar and days of the week, followed by the months of the year. Next, we listened to the next chapter of The Water Horse, talked about what has happened already in the story and what we predict will happen next. The class then practiced spelling using rhyming patterns, and continued to practice getting information from a newspaper article to answer questions. Next, we did an in class speech and language activity about categories. The students were given words and had to categorize and label the words themselves, and they did this more confidently than last day.
After recess, we had science. We worked on evidence and investigation to prepare for our visit from Mobile Escape tomorrow. Today, we talked about different kinds of evidence, and each person did handwriting and fingerprint samples that they had to match using physical clues. The students also used an eyewitness testimony to help them figure out who the main suspect was in a fictional scenario. It was a great opportunity to use information to answer questions. After lunch we had gymnastics in the gym, and we had math with our math coach Mr. Hassett. The students are continuing to work on skip counting, representing numbers, ordering numbers, and multiplication using visual strategies. **Reminders: - Mobile Escape is visiting tomorrow - Hats and coats are still to be worn outside - Gr. 1/2 Celebration of Learning assembly is Friday at 9:00 Today we again did the calendar, days of the week and months of the year to start the day.
