Today was another day that flew by!
The class started with volleyball in the gym, then we continued to read the next chapter of Matilda. Everyone is working on remembering they key points from the last chapter, and using keywords to predict what could happen next. For literacy we started talking about the Reading Power program, which all of the Grade 5/6 classes are doing. We started by talking about making connections when we read and what that can look like. We will continue talking about this on Thursday, and discussing the different 'pockets' that we put information into when we make literary connections. After recess we worked on representing numbers using base 10 blocks. Some people remembered using them last year, and other people were using them for the first time. We will be representing numbers in lots of different ways over the coming days. The students then continued to work on the ghost cookies that we started yesterday. Today we finished the dough, cut out the shapes and baked them. The kids will decorate them tomorrow afternoon. They look delicious so far! After lunch the students had music, and then we worked on our presentation for the Remembrance Day assembly. We are focusing on the Armistice, and each student is contributing a drawing or piece of writing to a video that our class will be showing during the assembly. At the end of the afternoon we worked with the speech and language therapist to role play some social interaction situations. Although they are fun, it is also great practice on taking turns, offering help, and using manners! Don't forget that students can wear halloween costumes tomorrow afternoon, but we ask that they do not wear face paint or masks, or anything that is violently themed or not school appropriate. Have a great evening, Ms. Anderson

Hi everyone,
Here are a couple points about Halloween at North Haven School: - Students are welcome to wear costumes tomorrow afternoon, they will be putting them on after lunch - Students are not allowed to wear masks or full face paint - We will be doing some Halloween themed learning tomorrow, but we will also be continuing with our planned curriculum learning We are looking forward to seeing all of the costumes tomorrow afternoon! Ms. Anderson Today was a very quick and busy day, it flew by!
We started with gym, a chapter of Matilda and then writing about what happened over the weekend in literacy. We are working on including more information in our writing and giving more details. The students then did a whole class speech and language activity, where we practiced using 'he' and 'she' to identify people. We will be doing more work on this over the next couple of weeks to help and support students to reach their communication targets. Today in math we started thinking about representing numbers. It was interesting to see how different people were using the same objects to represent numbers in different ways. Over the course of this week we will be using different methods to represent numbers, and then the students will show their thinking at the end. The students then practiced typing on the laptops, which we will continue to work on for the next little while. After lunch we started thinking about deforestation in science. The students thought about what the effects of cutting down forests can be, and they started to think about the ways that we can try to help the problem. Today we finished with cooking, although we ran out of time to complete the recipe. We started to make ghost shaped sugar cookies to work on our mixing skills, but we only had time to make the dough. Tomorrow we will find time to cut, bake and decorate them. Have a great evening, Ms. Anderson Just a quick reminder, school picture order forms are due in on Monday, October 29th!
What a busy week!
Today we started with gym, and then we read the next chapter of Matilda - the students are really enjoying the mischief that she is getting into so far! We then had our guided reading groups and some time on Raz Kids to work on independent reading skills. After recess we did a STEM challenge, where each group had to design a letter or number so that we could spell RM 8 (because we are in Room 8) - the challenge was to make the tallest number or letter using Lego in 30 minutes. There were even bonus points for a pattern! Each group managed to make a structure, and we were even able to make an R and an M. We will be doing this challenge again next week, with more planning time and job allocation before they start building. Today we moved our desks into groups, and these are the new groups that they completed the STEM challenge with. It was hard for some of the students to start working with a new group of peers, but by the end of the challenge there was some better teamwork happening! Before lunch we also had Life Skills, where we reviewed sequencing the days of the week and then used this information to start filling out a timetable as a group. We will continue this work next week. After lunch the class had music with Mrs. Hartley where they continued to learn about drumming, and then we had our library time to exchange books. At the end of the day, we did some group games. **Reminders - No school tomorrow (PD Day) - Sign and return IPPs if you haven't already Have a great long weekend! Ms. Anderson Following our usual start in the gym, we continued to read Matilda as a group - we are working on using information that we get from pictures, titles and the text to help us guess what is going to happen next.
In Literacy some students worked on story writing, others worked on writing phrases for pictures, and others worked on sight words and phonics. We then combined OT and speech & language by making words and statues out of play dough describe or copy a picture. The students have been working on plurals, by practicing putting an 's' at the end of words that are talking about more than one thing. This activity is based on resources gained from our speech therapist, and it helps students to improve on their social communication skills. They are getting really good at this! In math we wrapped up patterns - the students have worked really hard in this topic, it's great to see their progress! After math we worked on our piggy paper mache sculptures. It was very messy, but they will look great when they are finished! After lunch the students identified and sorted leaves and trees for our science lesson, and then we started on the Amazing Race Canada project for social studies. This will take several weeks and a lot of work, but the students seem excited to get started! **Reminders - Please sign and return IPPs if you haven't already - School picture order forms went home today - Library books are due tomorrow - Please do not send in toys from home - No school Friday (PD Day) Thanks! Ms. Anderson After starting the day with hockey in the gym, the students listened to the next chapter of Matilda - they are getting much better at hearing information from a story and and using it to answer questions. We then did guided reading groups and independent story exploration on Raz Kids.
Following recess, the students went on a pattern hunt around the school. Each group was able to identify multiple patterns around the school and discuss what made the pattern and what element would come next. The students also worked on health, where they learned about how to keep their bodies clean and healthy. It was great to see some of our older students working with the younger ones to help lead work groups in this lesson. Great work! In the afternoon, the class had music and drumming with Mrs. Hartley. We then did social studies, where we watched a couple kids news clips and discussed current events. It is nice to see the students starting to expand their understanding of the world around them. We then had the speech & language therapist come into the class to help us role play different social situations. It is fun and effective for the students to see how social situations look from the outside and to discuss how others might feel in these scenarios. We then finished the day with a game of 'What's in the Box' - our question asking/answering skills are getting so good! **Reminders - IPPs are due, please sign and return them - Pictures will be sent home tomorrow, please return order forms as soon as possible - Library books are due Thursday - No school on Friday (PD Day) Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with badminton practice in the gym. Currently the best rally that we have done is a pair of students have hit the birdie back and forth to each other 8 times in a row. We are working on breaking that record in the next session!
After starting to read Matilda this morning, the students worked on some literacy and wrote about what they did over the weekend. It sounds like everyone had a lot of fun and were able to relax a bit, to help get ready for this school week. During math we used more of the materials that we gathered on our science walk last week to create patterns of different levels of complexity. We are going to be wrapping up our pattern work this week and moving into place value. Following math, the students all worked on typing either letters or words during technology. It was really great to see people working on typing faster and more accurately. After lunch we worked on sorting and identifying the leaves that we had gathered by their shape. For a first attempt we did pretty well! We are going to look at the leaves more closely in upcoming lessons. We then made play dough in our cooking session. We will be using this play dough in OT and fine motor skills sessions, and it was fun to make as a group! **Reminders - Please read, sign and return IPPS as soon as possible - No school on Friday (PD Day) - Library books are due Thursday Have a great evening, Ms. Anderson Today was a fun Friday! After basketball in the gym, we started talking about our new story - we will begin reading Roald Dahl's Matilda on Monday. For literacy we worked on stories, writing sentences and phonics, and in math we did some money problem solving work. We will continue working on money over the next few weeks. Then, we completed a STEM bridge building challenge. The students worked in groups to create a bridge from Lego that crossed rivers of different sizes. There was some fantastic team work, and each group managed to create a bridge that spanned a river, and supported a toy dinosaur. Fabulous effort! We completed the day without technology as part of the No Screens Challenge - keep it up until 8:00 tomorrow morning! **Please sign and return IPPs ASAP Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson This notice was posted a couple of days ago, but here's a reminder for tomorrow - we would like everyone to try and participate!
We would like to have our students participate in the No Screens Challenge this Friday, October 19. We would like to offer one of Frisbee Robb's frisbee's as a prize for students whose parents send an email verifying that their child has spent the day doing activities that do not involve a screen. The conditions to be entered for the prize are that:
