Only 1 more day left of school until Christmas break! We are wrapping up our how to build a robot guides and robots will be sent home tomorrow. Students worked on their illustrations and cover pages today, and we will be putting the finishing touches on them tomorrow.
We started some watercolor tree art today. Students used geometric shapes and lines to make a tree in the middle of the page with bright colours surrounding it. Students worked on their fine motor skills using a small paintbrush, and learned that with watercolor you don't need much paint to make beautiful and vibrant colours. Reminder that it is PJ day tomorrow! We will be finishing up various projects we have been working on and also enjoying the last day together before the 2 week winter break!

With only 4 more days until the Christmas break we are finishing up some work before the deserved rest for everyone! Today we continued talking about our recycling project and how we are going to present it to the school. Students came up with examples of how to reduce, reuse, and recycle. They are showing leadership within the school by taking on the responsibility of recycling old/unused markers. We will make announcements and go from class to class to explain why it's important to recycle and protect our planet.
Students had the opportunity to write about something of their choice today. With Christmas coming up in just over a week, many students wrote about their favourite things about the holidays. Students have really progressed in their writing skills from the beginning of the year, and it was exciting to read about their interests. There is still time to order your school pictures if you haven't already! Go to my.lifetouch.ca to order. Your friendly Parent Association would like to remind everyone of the upcoming Healthy Hunger options. In January, we will have two snack days. Friday January 17th will be TEXAS DONUTS. A favourite returns! Friday, January 24th will be Kernels popcorn. Please consider purchasing a snack for your child and subsequently, supporting the Parent Association's fundraising efforts. February will have both a snack and a lunch so please watch the blogs for updates! Visit healthyhunger.ca to sign up and order food! North Haven’s Parent Council is doing a cheque writing campaign! Last year’s campaign funded new MacBook Airs to support technology in the classroom. The goal this year is to reach $5000. Currently, parent council has raised $1800 of donations! Please help support the cause! This could potentially fund new robotics, a soccer residency, and karate. Cheques can be made out to the Calgary Board of Education. Donations over $25.00 with the student’s name in the memo will be given a tax receipt. Thank you for supporting new learning opportunities at North Haven. MyCBE / PowerSchool will be unavailable from Dec. 20, 2019, at 5 p.m., to Dec. 27, 2019, at 11:59 p.m., for an important upgrade. This includes student fees and service registrations (i.e., transportation and noon supervision) In the spirit of giving, the staff, students, families, and community members of North Haven came together on Dec. 13th for our annual Community Family Outreach. The turnout and support for this special night was truly remarkable. It was a heartwarming evening. Thank you to everyone! It brought all members of our community together while incorporating the gift of giving. Happy Holidays from all the staff at North Haven! We look forward to having all students return from your holidays on January 6th. Throughout the year we have been talking about the importance of recycling to reduce the impact of our waste on the world. We expanded our thinking today by collecting all the garbage that we usually throw out at lunch and recess. Students were amazed at all the garbage we throw out in a single day. We talked about where all the garbage of all the people in Calgary goes - the landfill. It was shocking for some students to hear that Calgary has 2 landfills and that all the garbage goes there to decompose. Students learned that it can take up to 450 years to decompose. This really stuck out to students. We started thinking of ways we can be more environmentally conscious and what we can do to reduce our waste.
We started a new math program today called IXL math. We are working on building our number sense, paying particular attention to 100s charts and place value. Lastly our EDC friends are also looking for teas/hot chocolate, colouring books, pencil crayons/felts/crayons, bath/body bash, shampoo (2in1), oral care items, Polident, unscented Lotions/glaxal base, calendars, nail care/polish, playing cards, gift bags and issue paper. Thank you in advance. We look forward to seeing you this Thursday from 5:30-7:30pm. We had a busy week in Room 8! We continued to work on our how to build a robot guides. A few students have started typing up their projects to make a professional looking booklet. It has been exciting for students to see their robots in the hall and we have gotten so many compliments on the great work we've done with them.
We started playing some new word games that focus on short and long vowels. Students are learning what happens to a word by adding an e on the end (dim/dime). We have also been doing a lot of work on sight words and building our reading fluency. This week we did another 3 act math problem solving task. Students are getting proficient at using SOLVER to work through problems. Our task this week was to figure out how long a worm was in unifix cubes. Students used strategies like drawing, using cubes, and using a 100s chart. It was exciting for me to start seeing students becoming more independent at working through these types of problems. We will continue to work on similar problem solving tasks weekly. There is an upcoming Parent Council Meeting on Monday, Dec 9, 2019 from 6:30-8:00. All North Haven parents are welcome!
