Today we started with the calendar and days of the week, next week we will be adding the months of the year into our routine. Then, we did some Reading Power and made connections and asked questions about more pictures from The Water Horse. Some of the students are making great connections to other stories or characters that they know. Next, the students had independent reading time on Raz Kids and they read with an adult.
After recess, the students had music to practice their ukulele skills and then we had math. They are continuing to work on number names, sequences, representing numbers and multiplication. Today everyone was very focused and worked really hard on their math. After lunch our class had gym, and then we had our library time to do our book exchange. We then spent some time finishing up work from the last week, and played group games to work on turn taking and social skills. **Reminders: - Please sign and return IPP signature pages - Please return all overdue library books - Hats and gloves are still to be worn at recess - No school tomorrow - North Haven Family Hawaiian Dance is tonight 6-8pm, tickets are $2 at the door Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson

Today we once again started with the calendar and days of the week, and then we did some Reading Power and talked about making connections and asking questions about pictures from The Water Horse. Questions are still tricky, so we will keep practicing.
Then, we did a lot of thinking about Pink Shirt Day. We started with a speech and language activity where they had to think of words and ideas to go into the 'Pink Shirt Day' category, and each group thought of a lot of great words! We then watched a couple of videos that explained bullying and some strategies to deal with it. We had some great conversations about bullying, and then the students worked in small groups to act out scenarios about bullying and what to do. We also did a graffiti letters art project to make a mind map of Pink Shirt Day words, which will look fantastic once it is all put together. After recess, the students had science and worked on typing up their research that they have done on their planet or part of space. After lunch, we had gym with our friends in Bridges. Next, we had math with the math coach Mr. Hassett, where some students continued to work on numbers while others continued to work on multiplication. **Reminders: - Family Hawaiian Dance tomorrow 6-8pm, tickets can be purchased at the door for $2 - No school Friday - Hats and gloves still need to be worn at recess Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the days of the week and the calendar, then we introduced our next class book: The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith. We will be starting to read this story soon, and we are starting to make connections, visualizations and ask questions based on a summary and the cover page.
Next, we spent some time on Raz Kids for independent reading, and the students also had guided reading with an adult. We ended Literacy with a Kahoot! quiz to wrap up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - there were a lot of right answers, great recall of the story! After an indoor recess, the class had music with Mrs. Hartley where they started learning to play the ukulele. Then, we had math. The students are continuing to work on number representation and ordering, as well as multiplication using arrays. After another indoor recess, the class had gym and then we had social studies. The students worked really hard this afternoon on their Amazing Race projects - there is still a long way to go but they are making great progress! **Reminders: - Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day - Thursday is the Family Hawaiian Dance 6-8pm, $2 per ticket, tickets can be purchased at the door - All library books have to be returned, especially ones that are overdue! - All IPP signature pages need to be signed and returned Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the days of the week and filling in the calendar, and then we watched the last part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Everyone enjoyed watching it, and there were some great comparisons made between the book and the movie - some of the observations were very detailed. Next, we started preparing ourselves for the Calgary Opera performance of 'Nemorino and the Magic Potion' that was to be performed after recess. The students talked about what opera is, listened to some clips, and heard the synopsis of the show. Then, we had some volunteers act out the synopsis to help us understand what it was all about. We then did a whole group speech and language activity, where the students were given the category 'opera' and they had to each think of a word for this category. We will see if we can add any words to it tomorrow, now that they have witnessed an opera themselves.
The opera was a hit, and then we did some math. Some students are working on representing numbers, while others are working on multiplication using drawings or arrays. After another indoor recess, the students had gym, and then we did cooking. Today we made 'Willy Wonka's Walnut Apple Crisp'. We talked about what ingredients in the recipe is healthy, why we wash our hands, and how it links to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The students worked so well in the kitchen and were very sensible around the hot oven and the knives we used for chopping. **Reminders: - Please sign and return IPPs! You can contact me for a parent/teacher interview if you missed them last month - Pink Shirt Day is Wednesday - Family Hawaiian Dance is Thursday from 6-8pm - No school Friday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the days of the week and the calendar, which we are getting pretty good at! Then we watched the next part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which the students are really enjoying because they are able to link it to the book. Then, we had some time to work on the Willy Wonka candy invention posters and commercials.
Next, we had the whole school drumming assembly. It was a fantastic show of music, and each student in our class did an amazing job! Thank you to the parents who were able to make it to support the kids. It was great! We then had our integrated Inquiry Time, which is always a great opportunity for the students to experience new things and work with other students in the other classes. We then ended the day with some math problems solving and spatial reasoning practice. **Reminders - February 27th is pink shirt day https://pinkshirtdayalberta.ca - February 28th is the Family Hawaiian Dance from 6-8pm - Please sign and return all IPP signature pages Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson Today we started with our usual days of the week and calendar, and then we saw the next part of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - we saw and discussed how Veruca Salt got thrown down the garbage chute by the squirrels, and the class thought it was very funny! We are still working on telling the difference between questions and statements, but some of us are getting the hang of it. Then, we had guided reading and some independent reading time on Raz Kids.
After an indoor recess, the students had music for their last practice before the drumming assembly tomorrow. Then, we had math to work on counting, representing numbers and multiplication using arrays. After lunch, the class had gym and then we went to the library to exchange books. At the end of the day, we did a speech and language activity that focused on listening and interpreting information. The students were given verbal directions to draw a picture of a house, and they had to try and follow the instructions as carefully as possible. It also helped to practice vocabulary around top, bottom, left and right as well as good listening skills. Some of the drawings were very close to the original! **Reminders - Drumming assembly is tomorrow at 9:00, families are welcome to come and watch our class perform - Hats and gloves must be worn at recess - Please return library books that are at home - All IPPs must be signed and returned, conferences can still be booked through me if you would still like one - Family Hawaiian Dance is Feb. 28 from 6-8pm (see previous blog post) - Calgary Opera will be performing at our school on Monday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today we started with the calendar and days of the week, and then the class watched the next section of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is linked to the speech and language activities that we do to practice asking and answering questions. Next, the students worked to complete their Willy Wonka candy invention posters and write their scripts for their commercials. Some students recorded their commercials, others will finish next week.
After recess, the students had science. They continued to research their space topic to find information, and most people started to type their research in a document. The pages and illustrations will eventually be made into a class space book. We then did a Kahoot! quiz about space. After lunch, the students had basketball in the gym - there was some great passing and teamwork in the scrimmage! Next, we had math.
