Today was a really fun day!
We started with our calendar problem solving and days of the week, then we watched the first 10 minutes of the movie Matilda. We will be watching the rest over the next couple of weeks . The students then had literacy and worked on acrostic poems about the moon and clouds. Some of the creativity was fantastic! We then did math and the class worked through some problem solving word questions. We are getting more brave at solving difficult problems! After a quick snack and recess, the class then joined the other Grade 5/6 classes for our integrated Inquiry Time. Last week the students each chose the group that most interested them, and today we had our first full session. The students in our class chose either art or STEM, and started projects with their peers. It was great to see everyone engaged and working in different groups! **Reminders - Monday is our trip to the Rothney Astrological Observatory - Please do not send in hot lunches, we do not have access to hot water or microwaves - Please send in a bottle of water - We will have some time outside so please have students dress appropriately for the weather Have a nice weekend, Ms. Anderson

Today was very busy again!
We practiced the days of the week and reading the calendar this morning, then we finished reading Matilda. The students seemed to enjoy the story, and they are looking forward to watching the movie for a few minutes each morning over the coming days. The students then worked in their guided reading groups and on Raz Kids. It is nice to see some of the older students help the younger students with logging on to the laptops and the website. After recess the students practiced their recorders with Mrs. Hartley in music, and then we did math. Some students continued to work on representing numbers using base 10 blocks to help them think about place value, while some other students started splitting shapes into equal parts as an introduction to fractions. The class had gym right after lunch, and then we had our book exchange time in the library, then we did art. The students have almost finished the torn paper moon pieces that they started yesterday. It's great to see some of the students really showing depth and details with their art by using several different colours in their moons. **Reminders - Monday December 3rd is the field trip to the Rothney Astrological Observatory - No hot lunches on Monday - Wear weather appropriate clothing and footwear on Monday - Trip payments can be made online Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson This morning we did our routine surrounding the days of the week and calendar problem solving, followed by a chapter of Matilda. It's really fun to have the students who are unfamiliar with the story make predictions about what is going to happen next!
Then, we worked on making connections to a feeling in a story during our Reading Power session. We then alternated between guided reading and Raz Kids. After recess, the students had recorder practice in music with Mrs. Hartley, followed by math games. We played a game to practice making a number using base 10 blocks. The students are getting faster and more confident at representing numbers this way. Next, we had art. During this lesson each student completed a water colour and salt painting of a waxing crescent moon. They look fantastic, and it was great to see the students using different colours to represent different types of moons. These are linked to our science learning. After lunch, the students had gym and played basketball. We then had some time to work on our science vocabulary by making a Frayer model about the word 'waxing'. The class then finished the day by working on our Amazing Race Canada social studies project. **Reminders - Please sign and return all field trip forms by tomorrow - Library books are due Thursday - Indoor and outdoor footwear is required for all students - Please contact the school immediately if you would like to volunteer for Monday's field trip Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Dear Parents & Guardians,
The field trip permission form that was sent home yesterday is intended for all students in our class. It says Grade 5/6 at the top, but that is only because it was written by one of the Grade 5/6 teachers. All students in the PLP class were given a form to bring home, and all students are welcome on the trip. Apologies for any confusion that this may have caused. Thanks, Ms. Anderson Today was once again, a busy day!
We started with our usual routine of practicing the days of the week and reading a chapter of Matilda, which helps us to work on making predictions and recalling information from previous chapters. We then did some spelling and wrote about what everyone did over the weekend. We finished literacy by practicing using pronouns in sentences to work on our speech and language and social communication skills. After recess we did math and worked on numbers, counting and place value. We then did some science, and started to think about the moon. We worked as a group to order the 8 phases of the moon - it was a lot of problem solving but we got there in the end! The students will be starting an art project tomorrow that focuses on the different phases of the moon. After lunch, we had gym and played floor hockey with the Bridges class. Then, we had cooking where we made rock cakes. The students worked well in their groups to measure, follow the recipe and mix the dough. We didn't taste them yet, but they look yummy! **Reminders - Please read, sign and return the field trip permission forms by tomorrow - Students need indoor and outdoor footwear - Library books are due Thursday - Community Outreach Evening is on Thursday, December 13th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm (a donation list has been sent out if you would like to show your support, all contributions are greatly appreciated!) Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Dear Parents and Guardians,
On December 3rd, our class is joining the other Grade 5/6 classes on a trip to the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory as part of our upcoming learning on space. We will also be joining them on March 14th for a trip to a Mobile Escape Room to reinforce our learning around problem solving. The total cost of these trips is $15.75, which is to paid online. A letter will be sent home today with more information - please sign and return the forms by tomorrow, as the first trip is getting very close! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you, Ms. Anderson Today we started with our usual calendar routine and sequencing the days of the week. We then read another chapter of Matilda - the students are getting good at using what they have learned in Reading Power to make connections to the book. Next, we did some Reading Power and made connections to pictures from another book, followed by guided reading and Raz Kids.
After recess, the students had music with Mrs. Hartley, to practice their recorder skills. The recorders that were requested in the last round of orders should be in by next week. We then did math, and worked on place value and identifying ones, tens and hundreds. Right after lunch, the class had gym where they played hockey. We then went to the library to explore and exchange our books. After the library, we had "Finish Up Friday" time (even though it's only Thursday) to get a couple of art projects finished so that we can start new on some science-based art next week. The class finished their paper mache pigs that they have been working on, and they look fantastic! Most of the class decided to bring theirs home to keep or even make into piggy banks. We ended the day with some group games and music & movement. **Reminders - No school tomorrow (PD Day) - Indoor/outdoor shoes are required - Please make sure agendas are read and returned each day Have a great long weekend! Ms. Anderson Today was another busy day in PLP!
We started with our days of the week activity, and then we read a bit more of Matilda. The students are really looking forward to watching the movie once we are done the book so that they can compare and contrast the stories. We then did some Reading Power to practice making connections to things that we read, before going into our guided reading groups. The students also had time to do some independent reading and comprehension on Raz Kids. After recess the class had music with Mrs. Hartley, and everyone worked on their recorder skills. The students then had math class, and practiced their problem solving skills. Today a lot of the students were much better at using the information given to them to solve problems. Following lunch recess, the class had gym where they worked on their hockey skills, and then we did some social studies. The students worked through their Amazing Race project, where each person is on a different part. Finally, the speech language therapist came into do some social communication role play with the class. **Reminders - Indoor and outdoor shoes please! - Library books are to be returned for Thursday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today was quite the day! We started with the days of the week and another chapter of Matilda - the students are really getting into it now that Matilda has started using her powers. We then did a rhyming activity as a group, before splitting into our smaller literacy groups. The students wrote about what they did over the weekend, and they are being encouraged to extend their writing as much as possible. We then practiced using correct pronouns to identify others in our speech and language class lesson.
After recess, we had math where we worked on using pictures to solve problems, followed by some typing practice on the laptops. The students are getting more confident at logging in and using the computers. Right after lunch recess, we had gym with the Bridges class. The students had fun playing badminton, and they are starting to have more success when hitting the birdie with the rackets. Then, we did cooking. Today we made English scones, because the book Matilda is set in England. It was a simple recipe and they turned out great! The students are looking forward to tasting them at home - try them with butter and jam! Everyone helped to knead the dough before baking them. Today was a very noisy day in our classroom, but we talked about why it is important to be good listeners, particularly when cooking in the kitchen. A big thank you to the students who were good listeners all day! **Reminders - All students need indoor and outdoor shoes - Library books can be returned any day before Thursday Have a nice evening, Ms. Anderson Today was a very different but positive day!
After practicing the days of the week and reading another chapter of Matilda, we did our first mixed class Inquiry Time. The students had a taster session with the other 5/6 classes of art, STEM and environmental learning each with an indigenous connection. The students will then be choosing which area they want to focus on, and they will be taking part in Inquiry Time in that area for an hour each Friday morning. It was a great opportunity for integration, and the students will be doing a lot of academic and social learning through these inquiry-based activities. The work and ideas that they created are great, and we are really excited for the work that they will produce over the coming months! **Reminders - Students need outdoor shoes and indoor shoes at school, and if it is snowy they need to have boots - Next Friday (November 23) is a PD day - Please send in coats, gloves and hats for cold days - if you do not have them at home please contact the school Have a great weekend, Ms. Anderson |
