Today, after starting with the calendar and months of the year, we read the next part of Annie. I continue to be impressed with the amount of detail that the students are recalling from previous chapters. Then, the students had guided reading time with an adult, as well as independent reading and comprehension time on Raz Kids. If students are doing Raz Kids at home, please help them to remember to slow down as they are reading and not to flip through the pages too quickly.
After recess, we had a lockdown drill to practice our school lockdown procedure. The students were very sensible, and practiced keeping themselves safe. Next, the class had music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math. The students are working towards completing their Mondrian art projects, and are continuing to work hard on their math analysis of their art. After lunch the class had gym, and then we got our visual journals ready for the trip to Ralph Klein Park. Organizing the journals allowed us to practice some speech and language skills, as the students had to listen to instructions and ask questions to clarify their understanding. We also used a lot of positional vocabulary. Today we also tried the cheesecake that we made in cooking yesterday. The students gave a lot of thumbs up, I think it was pretty tasty! **Reminders: - Ralph Klein Park trip is tomorrow, please bring: coat, boots, hat, gloves, lots of warm clothes, rain/snow pants, a full water bottle, a packed lunch with extra snacks (there will not be access to hot water or microwaves) - Spring concert is May 15 at 6:30 - Library books are due Thursday

For the rest of the afternoon, they worked together to start building a model of the learning commons, based on their plan that they created as a class. The Grade 1/2 students will be planning and planting the flower garden at the front of the school. In order to do their planning they are looking for any extra Vesey’s Bulbs catalogues. If you have one at home and are no longer using it, can you please send it to school with your child. Thank you very much! After starting with the calendar, months of the year and days of the week, we read the next part of the book 'Annie'. The students have some familiarity with the movie, but the book is new to everyone. The students worked on making connections and asking questions, as well as retelling what happened yesterday. We then had literacy and introduced story writing using the narrative writing diamond.
After recess the students had math, where they continued their analysis on their Mondrian art using addition, counting and multiplication. Next, we had science. The students used magnifying glasses to make observations about different types of fabric in terms of colourfastness, wrinkling, absorbency and the weave. After lunch we had gym to practice soccer skills, and then we had an afternoon of working in the learning commons, art and speech and language. The students are continuing to use vocabulary to express dates and other calendar information, including their own birthday. **Reminders: - Jugo Juice snack day is Friday - Friday is early dismissal - Friday is Twin Day - dress like a friend! - See previous post regarding maker space donation materials - Ralph Klein Park trip is May 1 - Telus overnight trip (for Gr. 5/6 students who have passed in their signed forms) is May 2-3 - Spring concert is May 15 Some students at school have joined a makers space club, and some of these students have expressed an interest in deconstruction. The students then practiced asking questions as part of Reading Power. We then finished our literacy session with 1:1 adult guided reading and independent reading and comprehension practice on Raz Kids. After recess the students had music with Mrs. Hartley, and then we had math to continue working on number bonds to 10, and analyzing the Mondrian art pieces that each student created. The students are able to use counting, adding and multiplication skills through these pieces. Our class also joined the other Gr. 5/6 classes for an information session about our upcoming Ralph Klein Park field trip. After lunch the class had gym, and then we had social studies. The students are making good progress on the Amazing Race Canada project that they have been working on, and we will continue to work on this in the upcoming social studies lessons.
