They will also use their understanding of weather and seasons as well as new learning about winter clothing and equipment to compose paragraphs to describe their art piece. In PE: The gym is closed for painting. Today we had lots of fun cup stacking! In Math: We have been working on multiplication strategies. Students have finished their Lattice Multiplication personal anchor charts and centre work with problem solving and error analysis. Students worked with our math coach and Mrs. Hastie to introduce the Window Strategy and continued by creating anchor charts, solving questions using the strategy, problem solving and error analysis. We will continue building our toolbox of strategies this week with partial products and the traditional algorithm. There will be no problem solving this week. In Humanities: Literature Circles have wrapped up. Today students looked for examples of their best work and reflected on why it was their best work. Students have been tasked with doing some reading at home to ensure their Literature Circles work is finished. Students will be completing a summative assignment this week to share their understanding of the book they have read. Happy New Year to everyone!
I hope that everyone had a restful break! We have started right back to work, completing some assignments from December and continuing on our learning journey as well. In PE: We have been working on cooperative games, building our team work skills and positivity through team building activities. In Math: We have been working on multiplication strategies. We continue to for the past 2 days we have focused on getting comfortable with the Lattice Multiplication strategy. Tomorrow we will finished our personal anchor charts and then move into finishing our Lattice Multiplication Centre work with problem solving and error analysis! We will continue building our toolbox of strategies this week and then we will be putting them to use next week in some more center work! Students were also given a Multiplication Squares Problem-Solving task. We reviewed how a multiplication square works and completed examples as a class. Students were given one hour work work alone or collaboratively with peers to complete several multiplication squares as well as explain their strategies for determining the answers. This problem solving task will be due on Thursday January 10. Students must review expectations for problem-solving write-ups using the Wolves Problem-Solving rubric in their duotang or in the folder on Google Drive. In Humanities: Yesterday we reviewed expectations for written work for each of the Literature Circle jobs and for group communication and cooperation. Today, In our literature circle groups we continued reading our novels and sharing our findings. Social Studies: Grade 6 students are continuing to work in groups to create a Heritage Minute presentation focusing on a key point of Canadian history. Grade 6 students will be filming their heritage minutes by the end of this week. Remember to bring in anything you need for costumes! Current Events: Both grades reviewed news articles as groups. Grade 6 students learned about China sending a lander to the dark side of the moon while Grade 5 students learned about the coldest inhabited place on Earth, Oymyakon, Siberia. We reviewed the elements of a News Article write up and highlighted each component on the article itself. Students are expected to have this write up and the attached news article quiz completed and ready for marking on Friday January 18. In Science: Grade 6 students have been working on a Solar System Web Quest to help build background knowledge about the solar system projects ahead! Grade 5 students began building working weather instruments for their Weather Station Projects. Each group is in charge of making 5 different weather instruments. The students are to research, design, build and explain each weather instrument! The students will be working on this project over the next few weeks. *Students will need to gather supplies to build their instruments. Please talk to your child about what supplies they will need! Homework Humanities: Grade 5 - All Amazing Race work must be handed in. It is now overdue! Grade 6 - all Heritage Minute props and costumes are due in by Wednesday January 9 Grade 5 and 6 - Current Events write-ups and quizzes are due Friday January 18 Math: Multiplication Squares POEOW is due on Thursday January 10. Science: Grade 5s need to be bring in materials for their weather station projects by January 9th. Grade 6 - Solar System Web Quest is due Wednesday January 9 Reminders:
Learning Intentions By the end of our exploration of these units students should be able to use these "I Can Statements": Grade 5 and 6 Math - Multiplication I can use estimation strategies in problem-solving contexts. I can apply mental mathematics strategies and number properties in order to understand and recall basic multiplication facts (multiplication tables) to 81 and related division facts. I can understand, recall and apply multiplication and related division facts to 9 × 9. I can apply mental mathematics strategies for multiplication. I can demonstrate, with and without concrete materials, an understanding of multiplication (2-digit by 2-digit) to solve problems. Note: Students will investigate a variety of strategies (lattice multiplication, window strategy, partial products and standard/traditional algorithms) to become proficient in at least one appropriate and efficient strategy that they understand. Grade 6 only: I can demonstrate an understanding of multiplication of decimals (1-digit whole number multipliers). Grade 5 Science I can describe and demonstrate methods for measuring wind speed and for finding wind direction. I can describe evidence that air contains moisture and that dew and other forms of precipitation come from moisture in the air. I can describe and measure different forms of precipitation, in particular, rain, hail, sleet, snow. I can measure at least four different kinds of weather phenomena using student constructed weather instruments. I can record weather over a period of time. Grade 6 Science I can recognize that the Sun and stars emit the light by which they are seen and that most other bodies in space, including Earth’s Moon, planets and their moons, comets, and asteroids, are seen by reflected light. I can recognize that the other seven known planets, which revolve around the Sun, have characteristics and surface conditions that are different from Earth; and identify examples of those differences. I can recognize that not only Earth, but other planets, have moons; and identify examples of similarities and differences in the characteristics of those moons. I can identify technologies and procedures by which knowledge, about planets and other objects in the night sky, has been gathered. I can understand that Earth, the Sun and the Moon are part of a solar system that occupies only a tiny part of the known universe. Grade 5 Humanities I can demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how the physical geography and natural resources of Canada affect the quality of life of all Canadians. Grade 6 Humanities I can demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the dynamic relationship between governments and citizens as they engage in the democratic process. |
