Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Grade 5/6 at North Haven! We hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer vacation. We are so excited about this year and are looking forward to getting to know all of you. The bell rings at 8:00am, Tuesday September 3 ,2019. Please arrive anytime after 7:45am. Class lists will be posted on the doors for the first day. All teachers will be outside to greet the students. This year the grade 5/6 team is located in Room 14, 16 and 18. Communication Folders: Please refer to your child’s clear communication folder for important communication. Communication folders will be checked daily at school and should be checked at home for assignments and notices each night. The agenda folders are the most effective method for corresponding with your child’s teachers. Please reinforce with your child that it is their responsibility to ensure that their folder arrives at school each morning and is brought home each afternoon. Classroom Blog: The class regularly co-creates a blog message that highlight activities done at school that day. It also informs parents of notices and special events. Please check the blog daily. You will be able to access it on the North Haven School homepage or directly on the following link: school.cbe.ab.ca/school/northhaven/teaching-learning/classes-departments/pages/default.aspx Indoor Shoes: Please ensure that your child has indoor shoes that are suitable for the gym. Please label shoes with your child's initials. Running shoes are ideal. Flip-flops or big boots are not acceptable for gym class for safety reasons. The indoor shoes are to be left at school overnight. Water Bottles: We encourage all students to bring their own water bottle into the classroom each day. All water bottles should be labelled with your child’s name. Water bottles should be small in size and spill-proof for the protection of their belongings in their backpacks and their work on their desks. We will attempt to have their water bottles sent home every Friday so that they can be cleaned. Home Reading: Home reading is encouraged on a nightly basis of approximately 20-30 minutes. Reading aloud to someone aids in the development of oral reading fluency. Homework: Homework generally consists of work that students have not finished during class time. As well their will be weekly problem solving tasks that will be homework. Scholastic Book Orders: Order forms for Scholastic Book Club will be available on a regular basis. This is a good opportunity for you to expand your child’s library at home and in turn we are able to add to our classroom library as well. If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity to purchase reading materials, we would ask you to return the order form along with a cheque payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd or sign up for parent pay. Volunteering: We welcome and value our parent volunteers. If you are able to volunteer, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact your classroom teacher if you are available weekly or for field trips. Police clearance forms can be collected through the office. School Entry: Parents bringing their child to school are asked to say their goodbyes outside the designated doors. If for any reason, parents need to access the building, please sign in at the front office as per procedures. We encourage all Grade 5/6 students to enter the school independently. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming Welcome Back BBQ/Curriculum Night on Thursday Sept 12th 4:00pm-7:00pm. Please feel free to contact your child’s teachers via email or by phone through the office. Sincerely, Mrs. Hastie - [email protected] Mrs. Robb - [email protected] Ms. Frankcomb - [email protected]
