Tomorrow's schedule will be altered to accommodate an in-school program called "Let's Talk Science". Grade 5's and 6's will participate in a 1 hour program called "Entrepreneurial Science" in the morning with their homeroom classes. Program Description: Students form a company and invent and evaluate a self-propelled object. Students use problem solving, planning, designing, testing and budgeting. Reminder that report cards will go home with your child at the end of the day tomorrow. Please be sure to book in a conference to speak with your child's teacher on Thursday or Friday this week to discuss progress and any concerns that you may have.

Report Cards and Parent Teacher Conference
We would like to invite you to join us for the drumming assembly on Friday February 7that 10:30am. The North Haven students have been learning to play djembes (African drums) in music class for the past few weeks. The classes have prepared performance pieces filled with interesting and often complex rhythm patterns based on traditional melodies. Come and enjoy the performances and be amazed at the level of skill that our North Haven students have achieved! Parent Survey: Although it is early, planning for the 2020-21 school year is well underway. North Haven School will continue to serve North Haven community members and Harvest Hills students will be redesignated. More information about staying at North Haven and the redesignation for Harvest Hills students can be found on our school website. Phys Ed - Snowshoeing started today. Please continue to dress for the weather and be ready and wearing your outdoor clothes before PE each morning. Science: Grade 6's are continuing to work on evidence and investigation. Today we went outside to try to find tracks to practice our animal tracking skills. Quiz on this unit TBA, but coming soon. Grade 5 is working on classroom chemistry. Today we explored mystery mixtures, and we will be moving on to acids and bases. Social Studies: Grade 5's are looking at Indigenous nations across the regions of Canada and researching how they made their living using the resources the region provided. Grade 6's are continuing the study of Ancient Athens by looking at key locations that were the birthplace of democracy. Please remember that Social Studies textbooks for both grades are available on Google drive for study at home at anytime. Math: We started division today with all students. We reviewed the Big 7 strategy for division for students that studied it last year. Students discussed the meaning of and relationships between 'values' and 'relationships' . This unit will continue for the next two weeks. It's a great week to discuss your own family values as a family. Those not finished, should be working on this at home. If you are finished, please share with your family, and get some reader feedback. Does your story make sense? Grade 5 students have been continuing to practice their multiplication skills using the three strategies, lattice, window and traditional. Students are practicing with all three strategies to determine which strategy they feel most comfortable using. Ask your child to show you which strategy is their favorite! Grade 6 students are learning how to multiply with decimals. They are using the same three strategies, lattice, window and traditional, to multiply with decimals. Ask your child to show you which strategy is their favorite! Gym: This week we have been playing doubles kings court in badminton! Students need to use their badminton skills to stay on the kings side of the court of as long as possible! Next week in gym we will be snowshoeing (weather dependent). Students need to be wearing appropriate footwear such as, waterproof hiking boots, rain boots or winter boots. Shoes the students wore for camp would be perfect for this activity! Please have your students dress for the weather with snow pants, jackets, hats and mitts! Science: Grade 6 students have wrapped up all their YouthLink post-activities focusing on gangs, drugs and cyber safety. Our next steps are to be looking at tracking through footprints, tire and animal tracks. Grade 5 students started exploring 8 different mixtures! They needed to determine if the mixture was a solution, alloy, colloid or suspension and create a hypothesis on what ingredients are in each mixture! Earlier this week students got their Weather Watch tests back, if they have not been returned signed please do so by Friday. Humanities: Literacy: Students have been focusing on story writing with the use a of Haunted House picture prompt. We have focused on entertaining beginnings, elaborative details and suspense. This everyone worked on putting these elements together to start their story. We have started exploring main event and endings! Students will then be working to revise and edit their work! Social: Grade 5's have started their Histories and Stories of Canada unit by looking at different Indigenous Peoples of Canada and how their stories tell us about their beliefs regarding the relationship between people and the land. Grade 6's have started looking at Ancient Athens determining why the following sites were important to ancient Athenian democracy: Pnyx Hill, the Agora and the Bouleuterion. Gym: Students will continue badminton this week, we have been focusing on passing, aiming and different types of shots. Math: We are continuing learning multiplication strategies, over the past two weeks we learned Window Strategy, Lattice Strategy and Traditional Algorithm. For each method we will be working through direct teaching, working to examples together and then the students will have time to practice each strategy through a variety of questions and word problems. Science: Grade 6: This week we will be working through some post-activities around YouthLink Grade 5: Students completed their Weather Watch test on Friday and will be moving into Classroom Chemistry this week. Please donate any extras if you have some to be given to children when needed. North Haven will be hosting an Open House on February 3rd from 5:30-6:30. Join us for an information session, tour the building, visit classrooms, meet a few of the teachers, and learn about the engaging work of North Haven students! Today we had an amazing day at Youthlink - the Police Interpretive Centre. Students successfully used their forensic analysis skills to solve a crime and learned a great deal about online safety, gangs and drugs in the SafeStreets programs. All students are coming home with a Smart Choices Checklist and an information card from Youthlink. Tomorrow students will receive their certificates for successfully completing the program. There has been a reported case of head lice in Room 16/18. A letter will be going home tomorrow with your child, but we ask that EVERY parent checks their child TONIGHT, and for the next two weeks to ensure that they are not infected as well. Early detection is key to control the spread of head lice. Math - Multiplication - Gr. 5/6 students will be working on learning and reviewing the following multiplication strategies over the next 2 weeks: a) Lattice Multiplication b) Array/Window Multiplication Strategy c) Traditional Algorithm Students will also be practicing mental math strategies such as halving and doubling and closest ten as well as learning the value of estimating in terms of determining the reasonableness of their products.
