They will be sorting and classifying quadrilaterals as well as looking at other polygons. They will be using geoboards and pattern blocks in their investigations. Additionally they will be playing Rock, Paper Scissors to determine probability and defining probability as certain, more likely, likely, less likely etc. Grade 6s: This week students will be marking our motion geometry (translations, reflections and rotations) work and reviewing probability, measuring and classifying angles. We have 2 PATs this week in Math - Part B on Wednesday and Part A (computation) on Friday. Science: Grade 5s: - This week, students will be diving deeper into our Chemistry studies. We will be determining the differences between physical and chemical changes, identifying mixtures as homogeneous and heterogeneous and then further classifying them into solutions, suspensions, alloys and colloids. Later in the week students will be experimenting with separating mixtures based on their classifications. Grade 6s: Hot air balloon assignments have been marked and returned. Students continue to finish their Learn to Turn centre work on roll, pitch and yaw. Students will learn more about the four forces of flight, Bernoulli's Principle and how this works to allow objects such as airplanes and helicopters to fly. They will then investigate how this principle works in concert with the physical characteristics of certain animals to allow them to fly and why others cannot fly. Students are strongly encouraged to complete some practice science tests on Quest A+ over the weekend. Humanties/Social Studies: Grade 5s: Students have completed their Famous Five Facebook page assignment. This week they will begin an assignment on Shaping Canadian Identity. Students should be bringing this home to work on . Grade 6s: Students will write their Social Studies PAT on Tuesday June 11. Literacy: Gr.6 - Students have completed their practice Reading PAT and will spend some time this week doing an error analysis and brushing up in areas needed. Gr. 5 - Students will be completing reading testing with Mrs. Hastie. Gym: Kickball and Capture the Flag will be games played this week. Grade 6s: Students are working on classifying and comparing triangles (scalene, isosceles, equilateral, right, obtuse and acute). Students also worked on demonstrating that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is always 180 degrees and the sum of quadrilateral interior angles is always 360 degrees. We also looked at transformations and will work on a problem-solving task for our probability unit. Science: Grade 5s: - EMMUE test Thursday; Our work on Classroom Chemistry will take place over these final weeks. Students will be reviewing vocabulary and learning about states of matter, as well as the differences between physical and chemical changes. Grade 6s: Students created parachutes over the weekend, on Tuesday we dropped them to see how they performed! Students will work through a hot air balloon assignment and begin a centre on roll, pitch and yaw. Social Studies: Grade 5s: Students are working on a new assignment researching about the Famous Five. Students will use a template provided to them, to create a Facebook page for one of the Famous Five women. Grade 6s: Students are working on a consolidation project reviewing all of the topics covered this year in social studies. Humanities: Students are working on creating visual journal pages incorporating different figurative language devices. For example, simile, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and cliché. Gym: We started our kickball unit this week |
