We are asking students who have experience babysitting or working with little kids to volunteer in entertaining our new kindergarten students. We are hosting our open house Wednesday May 1 from 5:30-6:30 pm. If your child is interested in this leadership opportunity and is available to come to the school on Wednesday from 5:30-6:30, please contact your teacher. Thank you for your support. In French: Students have begun a French Food Comic Strip assignment. The due date has been extended to May 10. In PE: Soccer will continue. Social Studies: Grade 6 Students have started studying the Iroquois Confederacy - They are now working on the Iroquois "Glog" Project research. Students are working in small groups to research one of the 6 Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. They will learn how to prepare a "Glog" using the platform "Glogster". Grade 5 Students finished researching the stories and histories of their region and will be taking this knowledge to build a digital story book on Immigrants to Canada. Students have complete their initial research and have moved on to writing the script. In Science: Grade 6 All Evidence and Investigation Centres should be finished. All centre work should be organized into a booklet and ready for marking. The Evidence and Investigation Unit test will be on Tuesday April 30. Students have unit vocabulary that they should be reviewing. Study notes are posted in the Evidence and Investigation file on Google Drive and students have a paper copy as well. Grade 5 This week, students will be working hard to determine how switches work to help us in everyday life and experiment with magnetic fields and determine how they can help us.

Soccer Intramurals have also started and will continue for the next four weeks. In Math: Our work on Fractions continues. This week we have been finding fractions in paintings! We have examined art inspired by Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella and Piet Mondrian. Students in both grades are working hard to create Mondrian-inspired art pieces and find area, fractions, decimals and percentages. Grade 6 students have been challenged to find part to part and part to whole ratios in their art pieces as well. Student solutions for "The Unusual Baker" problem solving are due on Tuesday. All stories should now be handed in. Social Studies: Grade 6 Students will be researching the upcoming provincial election, they have been gathering information so they can part take in Student Vote. Students researched political parties this week and are to come to school Monday with their research questions done and come campaign literature created that they can use to teach their group about the platform of their chosen political party. They students will have and opportunity to cast their vote on April 15. Students will also have the opportunity to visit the polling station located at North Haven on Tuesday April 16. Ancient Athens test will be on Thursday April 18 - Students are making study notes for themselves. They can be studying their visual journals as well. Grade 5 Students finished researching the stories and histories of their region and will be taking this knowledge to build a digital story book on Immigrants to Canada. This week we introduced the project and over the weekend we are asking students to continue gathering information for this project. In Science: Grade 6 This week, students finished worked on Evidence and Investigation inquiry centre work on these topics: ink chromatography, latent fingerprinting, soil analysis, fabric forensics and handwriting analysis. Work on these centres will continue next week. All centres should be finished by April 18. Students have unit vocabulary that they should be reviewing. In PE: This week is our final week of movement and gymnastics. We have been working on practicing our skills through Mission Impossible. Student have been moving through an obstacle course with varying heights and speeds. In Math: Our work on Fractions continues. Grade 6 students are working on improper fractions and mixed numbers using manipulatives. Grade 5 students are working on comparing and ordering fractions as well as finding equivalent fractions. We have been looking at ordering proper (Gr. 5), improper and mixed numbers(Gr. 6) on a number line by using benchmarks such as 1/2 and 1/4 as well as finding common denominators. This week we also practiced our first part A PAT. This will be a starting point for our PAT review over the next few months. On Thursday we began a problem of the week called "The Unusual Baker." Students enjoyed working in groups and "working vertically."
