This has been a busy week at North Haven. Thanks to everyone who came today to see the Indigenous dance performance today. The students did a great job this week of learning the dances and sharing in the experience with artist Shirley Hill. Remember that she will be here next week as well working on an art project with the students.
Homework: -all unfinished science center work for 6's -French scrapbooks (due Tuesday) -Frayer Models and homework blogs problem (due Monday) -overdue reflections on art pieces (Greek urns and Indigenous art) Summary of the Week: French: We continued working on our Scrapbook projects focusing on Carnaval du Quebec (Grade 6) and Festival de Voyageur (Grade 5). Scrapbook due date has been extended to Tuesday, March 3. Math: Grade 6 and Grade 5 Frayer Models were due today. All overdue submissions must be handed in on Monday. Homework Blogs problem solving is due on Monday March 2. Science: Grade 6- All experiment write-ups for Is Air Everywhere?, Air Mass, Walking Balloons and Adjust the Volume, and Cutting through Air centre work was due today. Any unfinished centers must be handed in on Monday. Grade 5 - We have begun our Electricity and Magnetism inquiry by delving into the vocabulary. This week we learned about atoms, protons, electrons and neutrons. We also learned a lot about how static electricity happens and how powerful it can be. Our static electricity inquiries will continue next week. We will also begin our explorations with our electricity and magnetism kits. Humanities: Grade 6's have completed their scratch art Greek urns featuring the day in the life of a metic, slave or citizen, as well as writing about them. Next week we will complete our flow charts detailing decision making processes in Ancient Greece, and move on to review of this unit. Grade 5's are continuing their exploration of Indigenous artists across Canada by undertaking a new art piece and featured artist. Narrative Writing: Both groups have been working really hard of writing stories with cohesive and effective plots. We have been practicing, analyzing student work and reflecting on how good writers make connections between characters and events to move the stories along effectively. Today we wrote a new story from start to finish in a timed writing assignment.

Be sure to complete the comprehension questions! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pink Shirt Day This year, Pink Shirt Day, or Anti-Bullying Day, is on February 26. It is a day when people come together by wearing pink shirts to school or work to show they are against bullying. The focus for 2020 is "lift each other up." North Haven Leadership students will be back on the 'kindness patrol' all week, looking for evidence of students making kind choices to lift each other up. Please talk as a family about the huge positive impact that choosing kindness can have on the life of another person. Students read an news article to practice reading comprehension. French: Students continued working on their Festival du Voyageur or Carnaval de Quebec Scrapbook project. The project is due on February 27. Gym: Students worked on their offensive and defensive skills today. This week we will be moving into a scrimmage later this week. We will also be starting basketball intramurals this Thursday. Math: Gr. 6 - Today we looked at order of operations by using BEDMAS (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) within different algebraic questions. Students have been asked to complete their order of operations work by Wednesday. Gr. 5 - Students completed a division quiz designed to show growth in learning and in ability to problem-solve using division. Science: Grade 5: Students debriefed their cookie chemistry inquiry from last week, this allowed them to identify some strengths and challenges. It also allowed them to share their observations and conclusions. Grade 6: Reviewed different Air, Aerodynamics and Flight vocabulary words through their vocabulary sheets, if these are not finished they are now homework due Friday. We also reviewed experiment write-ups for our first lab - Is Air Everywhere? These labs are to be handed in by Friday as well. Students then began their second lab where they started writing their hypothesis and gathering supplies for "Does Air have Mass?" Tomorrow they will continue working through this lab. Humanities - Social Studies: Grade 5: Students handed in their indigenous paragraphs, if they were not handed in today they are homework due tomorrow. They then began identifying different indigenous communities on a map of Canada. Grade 6: Students picked a role to study more in-depth within our Ancient Athens unit. Students picked from Males or Females, citizens, slaves or metics. They will be using this information to develop an art project later this week. These results can be used to improve learning opportunities for students.
