Gym: This week students have been learning about Renbukai Karate. Karate training develops discipline, inner strength, improved self-confidence and self-esteem.
Health: Students learned about different nutrients and which ones are the most important. They have created mind maps to display their understanding. French: Students have continued to create Kindness Rocks and finger weaving bookmarks for our upcoming Agora. In addition, students have written reflections on both their Arrow Sash inspired bookmarks and the Kindness Rocks Project. Students have also been asked to study their French conjugations for être and avoir (which is in their French duotang) in preparation for an upcoming quiz to be completed by Monday. Math: Grade 5: Students have been exploring fractions on a number line. They have been creating benchmarks and comparing fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will begin looking at decimals and their relationship to fractions later this week and next week. Grade 6: Students have been practicing modeling improper fractions and concerting them to mixed numbers and the reverse. This week they will also compare at improper fractions to mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators using a number line. We will begin looking at ratios, decimals and percentages later this week and next week. Science: Grade 5: This week, students have been continuing with their inquiries into Electricity and Magnetism by completing STEM centres exploring how to light a light bulb, how bulb holders work and the benefits and drawbacks of both series and parallel circuits. Students have also been working diligently to identify controlled, manipulated and responding variables in our experiments. Grade 6: Students are finishing up their Air and Aerodynamics centers and will begin focusing building understanding of foundational flight concepts . All centre work is now due. Students have been participating in experiments and demonstrations which reinforce concepts including how to use fruit oxidation and burning to prove there is oxygen or a lack of oxygen in the air, as well as Bernoulli's Principle. Humanties: Literacy: Students are continuing to explore functional writing through writing news articles. Students will be crafting their first news paper article around their experiences with Elder Shirley Hill. Social: Grade 5: Students have wrapped up their current indigenous studies and will be moving researching the Fur Trade. Grade 6: Students will be completing their Ancient Athens Unit with a test on Thursday. Students have been creating a study guide focusing on the key elements of Athens democracy. Agora Both Grade 5 and 6 students will be participating in our Ancient Athens Agora. Students have been given a specific role (Male/Female, citizen, metic or slave), they have been asked to dress in their role by wearing a toga. Kanto Sho Karate Over the next two weeks we will be welcoming Sensei Glen and Sensei Tannis from Kanto Sho Karate. Students will be training in the art of Renbukai Karate.
